Happy New Year with FOLSC!
So much planning but so quickly behind us - suffice to say we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and, as I write, surrounded by the ‘the inland sea’, let’s hope we all enjoy a less wet 2024!
These words immediately follow our final event of 2023, when we were royally entertained by the Brass Octet of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, who performed a faultless ‘Christmas Fanfare’ that helped us forget the storms of the previous days. The young group of super talented musicians talked us through their playlist, that reflected both old and new; with highlights being the sadly departed Shane MacGowan’s ‘The Fairytale of New York’, excerpts from ‘the Nutcracker’ and ‘the Coventry Carol’.
We are currently reconciling the accounts - but with a ‘sold out’ capacity audience of 150 guests, the contribution to our fighting fund should be significant.
With the new year now upon us, the Trustees are well advanced with ideas to bring more top-class entertainment to the village. Whilst it is too early to release details of our plans for the full 2024 season, suffice to say at this stage can we recommend that you keep Saturday 29th June free!
Building on the success of the BSO concert in December, which clearly hit the spot, for our midsummer event we have another first for Long Sutton, and we will be bringing live Opera to the village hall! Clearly. if you have already secured tickets for Glastonbury and have existing plans to be crowd surfing in front of Madonna on the Pyramid stage that night, we will understand. Otherwise, we promise you an equally exciting (but less risky) outing!
The super talented Bristol based company ‘Opera in a Box’ with be performing Engelbert Humperdinck’s masterpiece ‘Hansel & Gretel’ in the village hall. This is great family opera, sung in English, and the team have guaranteed us (another!) night to remember. Watch out for further details in due course; but we recommend you book early to avoid disappointment!
We are working on other ideas as well, including, we hope, a pre-Christmas 2024 concert, so watch out for news updates via these pages in due course. Very best wishes to our members, villagers and the wider community - and let’s hope we all have a Happy New Year!
